Liqui Moly Beta’s Zane Roberts extended his win streak to three after a race-long duel with series newcomer Dante Oliveira at the Rabbit Creek 100 by Dirt Inc., round three of the AMA Hare & Hound National Championship Series, Presented by FMF, March 29-20.

A determined Oliveira and the defending series champion, Roberts, exchanged positions throughout the entire 104 miles, with Roberts keeping his ace card until the alternate gas stop on the 46-mile second loop. While FMF KTM Factory Off-Road Racing Team’s Oliveira stopped for a quick splash, Roberts avoided the pit and gained enough of a cushion to keep the series newcomer at bay for the remaining miles. He took the checkered flag after two hours, 47 minutes, and 33 seconds, finishing eight seconds ahead of Oliveira. Pro 250 winner Sam Pretscherer secured third overall in 2:50:32.
“Yeah, [Dante’s] making it harder on me every time,” Roberts said about his closest championship rival. After a good start on his Bridgestone/FMF/Klim 480 RR got him second to the bomb behind Norman Racing Husqvarna’s Daemon Woolslayer, he said, “I was sitting in second a few miles in and Dante went flying by, and I’m like, ‘All right, we’ll go!’
“I went to work keeping Dante in check. I knew it was probably going to be about three hours [total race time] today, so I wasn’t in too big of a rush; I just kept him around 10 to 15 seconds ahead.”
After the alternate pit on the faster 58-mile first loop, things heated up.
Roberts said, “I was kind of like, ‘I’m going to not push it right now’ because I knew as soon as I pushed Dante, it was going to get pretty nasty. Eventually, I decided it was time to go, and I took a shot, and he got me back. It got pretty nasty after that.”
And by nasty, Roberts meant the two going at it for the rest of the race. Oliveira and his Red Bull/Dunlop/Alpinestars 450 XC-F held a two-second lead over Roberts at the end of loop one, with Pretscherer just over a minute behind and Woolslayer about two minutes back in fourth overall.

But after the alternate pit on the more technical 46-mile loop two, Roberts played his trump card, making his race-winning pass by opting not to get a splash of fuel while Oliveira had to stop briefly.
“The Beta’s pretty fuel-efficient—I’ve probably still got half a tank,” Roberts smiled at the finish, where he enjoyed an eight-second cushion over Oliveira.
“Eight minutes at the first one, three or something at the second one, and now a couple seconds here at round three, and I led the majority of it,” the runner-up observed. “I got squirrelly a few times, but I think this [Idaho terrain] kind of suits my style a little bit more, because it’s a more clearly defined trail that you don’t want to stray off. For sure, it was a fast round, but it had a good flow to it, a good 104 miles!”
Pretscherer slipped slightly off the pace in the final miles, finishing almost three minutes behind Roberts but still good enough for the Pro 250 triumph and third overall aboard his Precision Concepts/Golden Tyre/Troy Lee Designs FX 250.
“I did a gearing change, and I was glad I did because I didn’t back off the whole day—that bike was on the limiter the whole day!” he said. “I’m pretty heavy for a 250, so I have put a 49 [tooth rear sprocket versus a 50] on before, but it doesn’t pull properly. Going through the last pit, I was very close, but I was smoked! The last 15 miles, they did a lot of damage.”

Among Pretscherer’s victims was Woolslayer and his AHM Suspension/Seat Concepts/Klim FX 450, equaling his Open Pro result from round two, though he was off the overall box by one.
Johnny Campbell Racing (JCR) Honda’s Preston Campbell put his CRF450RX into fifth overall, fourth Open, followed by teammate/cousin/Pro 250 runner-up Nolan Cate on his CRF250RX.
Local favorite David Kamo got off the line best and hit the end of the bomb third overall. Despite nearly drowning his Kamo Realty/PCI Race Radios 450 XC-F after the second loop alternate pit, he kept it running to place seventh overall and win Pro Vet 35+.
Pro 250 riders Brody Honea and Ryder Thomaselli and Open Pro Laine Stephens rounded out the top 10.
In Pro Women, Ava Silvestri and her 395 Motorsports/FMF/Troy Lee Designs GasGas EX 250F dominated from the start, finishing 25th overall.

“This was my first hare and hound win the last time I was here,” she said, “so I kind of wanted to carry that momentum and the momentum from round two [which she also won] as well.
“I funneled into the bomb behind Preston Campbell, so I was like, ‘I guess I’m pretty far up here!’ Then all the [Pro] 250 guys were passing me, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m pretty far up here right now!’ I didn’t know how far of a lead I had, but I tried to stay mistake-free because it’s the first Hare & Hound where I’ve not made any mistakes!”
That gives her sole possession of first in Pro Women points over defending champ Rachel Stout, the FMF/RPM Racing KTM star taking advantage of a last-turn mistake by Ty Woolslayer to nab second place. Pure Adrenaline Yamaha’s Woolslayer picked her bike up and earned third, five seconds behind Stout.
